Na medida em que, do conjunto de colegas pré-inscritos para participação na terceira turma da Oficina de Fotografia que prevíamos dinamizar no âmbito da Workshop "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais", apenas um número reduzido concretizou a sua inscrição - e tendo em conta o numerus clausus que o Instituto Português de Fotografia impõe para realização das suas formações - vemo-nos obrigados a cancelar a realização desta iniciativa.

Aos colegas inscritos/as, o nosso pedido de desculpas; e a todos/as os que participaram nesta Workshop, muito obrigado. Continuem a acompanhar este blog, pois 2011 trará, daqui a alguns meses, novidades...

AMANHÃ! Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais"

Têm lugar amanhã, na Sala de Reuniões da FLUP, a partir das 10h00, as Conferências integradas na Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais", que inclui ainda uma formação em fotografia ministrada pelo IPF.

O programa final das Conferências, bem como algumas informações adicionais relevantes podem ser encontradas aqui e aqui, respectivamente.

Dada a procura registada, teremos sala cheia, ao que tudo indica, pelo menos durante a conferência da nossa convidada internacional, Sarah Pink. Lembramos, no entanto, a importância das conferências que se realizam antes da sessão final; nelas serão apresentados e discutidos aspectos relativos aos recursos disponíveis no domínio do visual para os Investigadores em Ciências Sociais e Humanidades, bem como experiências de utilização desses recursos em casos concretos de pesquisa. O objectivo é de formação, por um lado, e de promoção do debate reflexivo, por outro. Os contributos que, neste sentido, a audiência puder fornecer nos momentos de discussão serão certamente inestimáveis.

Conferência Sarah PInk, 10 de Dezembro, FLUP: Inscrições suspensas

Tendo sido atingida a lotação da Sala de Reuniões da FLUP no que diz respeito a inscrições para a Conferência de Dia 10 com Sarah Pink, vemo-nos forçados a suspender a aceitação de novos pedidos de inscrição. Existem, entretanto, algumas vagas para as sessões que antecedem a Conferência com Sarah Pink.

Nos próximos dias, tentaremos acompanhar o andamento das inscrições e, em caso de desistências, reabri-las-emos.

Em última instância, os/as interessados/as poderão comparecer na Sala de Reuniões da FLUP no dia 10, podendo assistir às Conferências se se verificar a existência de lugares disponíveis.

Oficina de Fotografia Social: Indicações para os Participantes

Devido à elevada procura, está suspensa, por ora, a recepção de novas pré-inscrições para a terceira turma da Oficina de Fotografia Social que o Instituto Português de Fotografia dinamizará em articulação com a Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais" - esta agendada para o próximo dia 10 de Dezembro, na Sala de Reuniões da FLUP. As três turmas desta Oficina de Fotografia Social realizam-se nos dias 3 e 4 de Dezembro, 17 e 18 de Dezembro e em meados de Janeiro (data a confirmar).

Aos participantes das três turmas, algumas indicações adicionais:

O IPF tem instalações na Vitória, Porto (ver local exacto aqui). O local não é de fácil acessibilidade por automóvel, pelo que se aconselha o uso de transportes públicos (autocarros com paragem na zona da Cordoaria, estação ferroviária de S. Bento, estação de metro de S. Bento).
Na envolvente, há, ainda assim, muitas opções para o almoço, a preços mais ou menos acessíveis.
O horário será entre as 10:00 e as 13:00 e entre as 14:30 e as 17:30 em ambos os dias (total de 12 horas).
Quanto ao uso de máquina fotográfica, ele não é obrigatório, mas muito desejável, visto que a formação terá uma componente prática. As indicações quanto ao material necessário estão contidas no programa da Oficina, que já distribuímos aos participantes das duas primeiras turmas e que poderemos fornecer a quem no-lo solicitar por e-mail para ptrs.porto@gmail.com.

Sarah Pink's Bio and Abstract of the December 10 Conference in Porto

Sarah Pink is going to close the International Workshop "Visual Methods: Resources and Uses in Social Sciences", that's going to take place in Porto next December.

Sarah Pink is Professor of Social Sciences at Loughborough University, and during the academic year 2010-11 is Visiting Scholar the IN3 (Internet Interdisciplinary Institute), at the UOC in Barcelona. Her research although rooted in anthropology is interdisciplinary and often makes connections between theoretical and applied scholarship. Her current projects focus on themes of digital media, energy, sustainability and activism in domestic and urban contexts. Her theoretical work investigates questions of place, practice, movement, the image and sensory experience. Most of her work involves the use of visual methods and media. Her books include Home Truths (2004), The Future of Visual Anthropology (2006), Visual Interventions (ed) (2007), Doing Visual Ethnography ([2001] 2007) and Doing Sensory Ethnography (2009). She is currently writing a new book Situating Everyday Life: practices and places, and editing a volume entitled Advances in Visual Methodologies.

In Porto, Sarah Pink's presentation, entitled IMAGES, SENSES AND APPLICATIONS: ENGAGING VISUAL METHODS, will discuss how visual methods are advancing in a contemporary environment where applied, activist, public and interdisciplinary uses of social sciences are increasingly central. It'll first outline some of the ‘hidden’ history of the use of visual methods in applied social research since the middle of the twentieth century. From there it'll continue to discuss how recent theoretical and methodological developments in visual research relating to questions of the senses, movement and digital media are contributing to a new arena of applied and public visual practice in social sciences. This, it'll be suggested, forges new and significant connections between social sciences and other disciplines, inspires theory building and increases the relevance of visual methods in processes of social intervention and public debate.

Oficina de Fotografia Social: NOVIDADES!

A Organização da Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais" conseguiu junto do IPF a abertura de uma segunda turma de formação da Oficina de Fotografia Social promovida no quadro da nossa Workshop. Esta segunda turma, cujas 15 vagas estão já preenchidas, realizar-se-á a 17 e 18 de Dezembro de 2010, isto é, uma semana depois das Conferências de dia 10 na Sala de Reuniões da Faculdade de Letras do Porto.

Entretanto, o IPF está disponível para abrir uma terceira turma, já em Janeiro de 2011, muito provavelmente, para acomodar eventuais interessados em frequentar uma formação deste tipo.

Nesse sentido, para podermos avaliar da pertinência da abertura de uma terceira turma, aceitaremos as manifestações de interesse que vierem a ser enviadas durante este mês para ptrs.porto@gmail.com. A nova turma, a abrir, terá igualmente 15 formandos. O registo de interesse seguirá a ordem de chegada dos e-mails.

Quanto ao programa definitivo das Conferência de 10 de Dezembro, o mesmo será divulgado no final desta semana.

Oficina de Fotografia Social: VAGAS PREENCHIDAS!

Tendo em conta o grande número de inscrições na Oficina de Fotografia Social integrada na Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais", organizada pelo Instituto de Sociologia, vê-se a Organização do evento na necessidade de suspender, pelo menos temporariamente, a aceitação de novas manifestações de interesse na acção de formação que o Instituto Português de Fotografia ministrará.

Num primeiro momento de divulgação, depressa completámos as 15 vagas disponíveis. Encetámos então contactos com o IPF no sentido de estudar a possibilidade de abertura de uma segunda turma. Neste momento, existe a possibilidade - ainda não confirmada - de essa segunda turma se realizar, mas a verdade é que também já há mais 15 pré-inscrições na mesma. Vemo-nos, portanto, na necessidade de suspender a recepção de novas manifestações de interesse, pois não sabemos se será possível abrir uma terceira turma.

A breve prazo, daremos mais novidades sobre este assunto. Até lá, fiquem a conhecer as actividades do Instituto Português de Fotografia aqui.

As inscrições para as conferências de dia 10 de Dezembro, na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, essas, mantêm-se abertas, estando a audiência das sessões limitada à capacidade da sala.

Sarah Pink fechará a Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais"

Está confirmada a presença de Sarah Pink, professora e investigadora do Departamento de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Loughborough, Reino Unido, no encerramento da Workshop Internacional "Métodos Visuais: Recursos e Usos nas Ciências Sociais".

Sarah Pink é autora, entre outros trabalhos, do reconhecido livro "Doing Visual Ethnography", onde apresenta, a partir das suas pesquisas de terreno em Espanha, sobre mulheres e touradas, e na Guiné Bissau, sobre desigualdades económicas, as virtualidades da utilização de recursos visuais, designadamente dos proporcionados pela utilização da fotografia, do vídeo e dos chamados "hipermédia", na investigação em ciências sociais.

No seu mais recente trabalho, "Doing Sensory Ethnography", um trabalho pleno de inovação conceptual e de relevante reflexão epistemológica e metodológica, Sarah Pink discute a importância da atenção reflexiva que deve ser dada àquilo que chama de "sensorialidade" da experiência - e aqui não apenas da experiência dos agentes que se pretende "investigar", mas também da própria experiência de pesquisa desenvolvida pelos agentes enquanto "investigadores".

Não sendo a primeira vez que visita o nosso país, será a primeira vez que Sarah Pink participará num evento na Universidade do Porto. A intervenção de Sarah Pink terá lugar no dia 10 de Dezembro de 2010, 6ª Feira, pelas 16h30, na Sala de Reuniões da Faculdade de Letras. Sarah Pink, researcher and professor at the Loughborough University, author of Doing Visual Ethnography, will be the keynote speaker of our International Workshop on "Visual Methods: Resources and Uses in the Social Sciences", that will take place in Porto, December the 10th 2010.

This Workshop will be preceded by a workshop on social photography conducted by Alexandre Souto, of the Portuguese Institute of Photography.

Na sequência da realização, em Dezembro de 2009, da Workshop Internacional "Paths Towards Reflexive Sociology: Ethnography Matters", que teve lugar na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, e tendo em conta um dos seus resultados, a saber, a consciência de que alguns dos relevantes aspectos nela abordados necessitam aprofundamento, decidiu a Comissão Executiva do evento propor ao Instituto de Sociologia da UP a realização de um novo encontro, desta feita subordinado especificamente ao tópico dos "Métodos Visuais nas Ciências Sociais" e contemplando uma vocação formativa clara.

O evento realizar-se-á nos dias 3, 4 e 10 de Dezembro de 2010, sendo constituído, nos dois primeiros dias, por uma oficina de fotografia social ministrada pelo Instituto Português de Fotografia e, no dia 10, por uma conferência internacional. Nesta conferência, cujo programa está ainda em elaboração, serão discutidos aspectos relativos, por um lado, aos recursos disponíveis para os investigadores interessados em mobilizar elementos visuais nos seus trabalhos e, por outro lado, aos desafios da utilização destes recursos na pesquisa de terreno. A conferência de dia 10 será encerrada por Sarah Pink, professora e investigadora da Universidade de Loughborough, Reino Unido, e autora, entre outros trabalhos, do livro "Doing Visual Ethnography".

O programa completo do evento será brevemente divulgado.

Passou bastante tempo desde a Workshop Internacional de Dezembro de 2010. Mas os caminhos rumo à sociologia reflexiva não foram fechados. Bem pelo contrário! Passe no nosso blog ao longo das próximas semanas e descobrirá os novos caminhos que se estão a abrir, todos vindo dar, uma vez mais, à cidade do Porto, novamente em Dezembro, desta feita de 2010.

Dear Colleague,

It was a great pleasure having you at the International Workshop "Paths Towards Reflexive Sociology: Ethnography Matters" that was held by the Institute of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts, Porto, Portugal the past 10th and 11th December. We had two days of wonderful debate on some decisive epistemological, theoretical and methodological issues concerning the research in social sciences, brought to us by the insights of some fantastic studies from all around the world that are being carried on or were recently finished.

As we said in the workshop closure, we now have three purposes: to publish the presented papers and the discussant’s comments on the papers; to try to create a discussion forum on the matters raised by the workshop; to try to arrange for other meetings of the same kind to happen – once again in Porto or in other location. We hope that more and more colleagues join us in this effort.

Caro/a Colega,

Foi um prazer ter podido contar com a sua presença na Workshop International "Paths Towards Reflexive Sociology: Ethnography Matters", que o Instituto de Sociologia organizou na Faculdade de Letras do Porto nos passados dias 10 e 11 de Dezembro de 2009. Foram dois dias de intensa reflexão e debate em torno de algumas questões epistemológicas e teórico-metodológicas absolutamente decisivas no que toca à investigação em ciências sociais, a partir dos resultados de algumas excelentes pesquisas em curso ou recentemente concluídas um pouco por todo o mundo.

Como pudemos sublinhar no encerramento da iniciativa, três propósitos serão agora alvo da nossa atenção: por um lado, avançar no sentido da publicação de um volume com as comunicações apresentadas; por outro lado, constituir um fórum de discussão em torno dos aspectos relativos à "prática da razão sociológica"; por outro lado ainda, permitir que se criem as condições para a realização de novas iniciativas do mesmo tipo. Oxalá possamos juntar neste esforço mais e mais colegas.

The PTRS discussion-oriented International Workhsop that the Institute of Sociology at the University of Porto is organising will take place in Porto, Portugal next December (the 10th and 11th). Porto is the second most important city in Portugal. Although it is a "shrinking city", it's the centre of a metropolitan area with over 1,2 million people and a very beautiful location. Day 1 (December the 10th) will consist of three open debate sessions (1. "Grounded approaches to social change"; 2. "Inside the State"; 3. "The sociological craft: practical sense and reflexivity"). Check the Final Programme attached to this e-mail. Presenters will have about 20 to 25 minutes each one to pose their arguments. In the evening there will be some cultural activities in Espaços UP (click here and here to see how you can get there from Palacete Burmester). We will show the documentary by Haroun Farocki "Workers Leaving the Factory" (1995, in English with Portuguese subtitles), followed by a debate with two guests.

Day 2 (December the 11th) will have an open session on innovative ways of doing and thinking ethnography and the Final Session with Simon Charlesworth and Ariel Sevilla. The discussant of the Final Session will be our own Professor José Madureira Pinto. It's going to be just great. Sessions will take place at the Main Room (Anfiteatro Nobre) of the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto (click here to see some photos; the main building of the Faculty of Arts is not far away from Palacete Burmester, as you can see if you click here).

Lunch

Lunches - both Thursday and Friday - will be at "Restaurante do Clube", a place very close to the Workshop venues (see here and here). For 8,50€ (all included: soup, meat and/or fish dishes, drinks, dessert and coffee), you can eat a nice meal and also get to know everybody a little bit better. Conference participants, discussants and other guests will be there too, so you'll be able to discuss further with them after or before the Workshop Sessions.

If you wish to have lunch with us, please let us know by e-mail or Thursday morning at the Welcome Desk of the Workshop in Palacete Burmester. You don't have to pay in advance; you'll pay there after having eaten.

Travelling

Porto is served by a very nice airport (Porto Airport or Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport - OPO), which is outside the city but not very far away (visit the website here). It's one of Ryanair's hubs, so it's ideal for participants travelling from other european countries.

To come from the airport to the venues, you just have to grab a taxi or take the metro (Purple Line until Casa da Música/Music Hall, direction Estádio do Dragão/Stadium of Dragon, as you can see here). Please make sure you tell us when are you going to arrive at the airport and if you'd like a ride or prefer to explore the way through here by yourself.

For the ones travelling from outside the EU, if you need a document saying you are going to participate in PTRS for visa purposes, please let us know. We'll scan it and send it to you via e-mail a.s.a.p.

PTRS's Final Session

The Scientific Committee is now releasing the first results of the evaluation of the large amount of answers to our Call for Papers that we received throughout the last couple of months.
We don't have yet the final version of the workshop's program, but we can announce that we'll have an outstanding Final Session, with the presence of Simon J. Charlesworth, sociologist and the author of the impressive "A phenomenology of working-class experience", and Ariel Sevilla, from Laboratoire Printemps at the University of Versailles, France, and currently the General Secretary of the French Sociology Association.

Wether you're going to present a paper or not, please make sure that you're going to take part in the debate!

The PTRS's Call for Papers is now closed. We have received a large number of proposals from all around the globe and we're already going through them. Authors should be contacted by the Executive Committee during this week or so. Although we're still analysing the proposals, we can anticipate, taking into account the overall quality of the abstracts that were sent to us, a great workshop, with oustandingly innovative and original presentations.

We can talk the talk... and now we're going to walk the walk!

Paths Towards Reflexive Sociology: Ethnography Matters! is taking place next December in Porto.

Paths Towards Reflexive Sociology: Ethnography Matters

Continuous development and changing nature of our society require a steady reflection on and revision of our ways of doing sociological research. Oftentimes, however, sociologists are faced with rigidly structured academic fields that force scholars to be cautious while choosing research topic and methods of inquiry. Nonetheless, social change has a direct impact on what we study, how we conduct research, and how we present our research findings.

Moving from positive science to reflexive science means a constant questioning about the social and political implications of social research. It also means being aware of the specific social effects generated by the researcher’s presence in the world he/she studies. PTRS: Ethnography matters invites papers that address these issues. We welcome submissions not only from scholars, but also from social practitioners and activists who have a first-hand experience.

The session will have two main focuses:

1. Ways of doing and reasoning
New research fields and questions often require not only changes in our research methods and techniques, but also a will to permanently embrace theoretical and epistemological questioning.We use visual materials, instead of only focusing on numbers and words, to make our studies more elaborate; we employ online questionnaires and discussion forums to collect data; we use statistical and qualitative software during the data analysis stage; especially, we submit ourselves to fieldwork harshness.Refusing the academic «state of grace» usually taken for granted, we are ready to reflect upon our work and our place when conducting social research.We encourage submissions that deal with unconventional ways of conducting social research and with the challenges and opportunities of a reflexive sociological craft.

2. Innovative Ways of Presenting Results
Unconventional ways of doing research are not only about employing «new technology» or «innovative techniques». They bring to the fore some of the social, practical, epistemological, and ethical impacts often disregarded in the academic world.Traditionally, sociologists have attended conferences and published peer-reviewed articles and books to share their research results with others. Nowadays, sociologists can’t ignore the growing demands issuing from the very same individuals and communities until now often reduced to the status of mere «objects» or «informants».We thus invite papers that address the nature of research results and new ways of knowledge presentation and dissemination.
